Many grisly, unspeakable horrors occurred in the Yugoslav wars during and after its dissolution. Slaughters, abuses, and war crimes were committed all throughout these wars, and many still live with these harsh memories. Taking any side regarding the conflict is a bad idea. While Montenegrins are speakers of a Slavic language, they are not Russian. Although they were part of a socialist state, they were never a member of the Soviet Union. A suspected pro-Russian coup has been attempted very recently. Try not to mention Russia too much, as Montenegrins by and large are not very excited about Russia.

If you have sensitive lungs, don’t forget to pack your inhaler. Many Montenegrins smoke, and they do it everywhere.
When visiting someone’s home, make sure to take your shoes off! This custom is observed in many Balkan countries, and Montenegro is no different! Make sure your socks are presentable since they’ll be seeing them.
