Advice For Driving In Australia

From a local Aussie

Driving long distances in Australia is a regular occurrence and planning a road trip holiday is a great way to experience parts of the country. Often it is much cheaper than flying, or the destination you want to travel to is unreachable by commercial flights.

Over time, I have realised that what I see as common sense may not be for others. So, if you are interested in seeing all the off-the-beaten-track places Australia offers, here is some advice.

Many car rental companies have a maximum mileage limit or charge per km after a certain amount. So if you plan on doing a fair bit of driving, this is something to keep in mind.

Australia is massive, and there is not much between towns in most of the country (unless you’re driving along the east coast). It’s only on the major highways that you have service centres with fast-food places and fuel.

Know where you are going and how long it will take, and plan out some stops where you can get fuel and snacks. Service centres will have toilets, and most small country towns usually have public bathrooms at the park.

Depending on who your mobile carrier is and how remote you are, it is not uncommon not to be in mobile signal range in between towns.

Certain mobile carriers are getting better, but in general, Telstra seems to have the most comprehensive network coverage (it's also, unfortunately, more on the expensive side)

This should be a stock standard regular practice, but particularly when travelling, make sure that your car has a full tank of fuel, the oil and water tanks are full, and tire pressure is checked (including the spare)

It is also a good idea to load the car with drinking water and snacks- partly to deal with bordem, but also it means that you have things on hand if there isn’t anything open or you want to stop at one of the rest areas on the side of the highway.

It is not a given that you will be able to quickly get roadside assistance if you end up having issues.
