My Experience in Public Speech

Back in high school I was petrified to speak in front of a class, and honestly I couldn’t figure out why. Not just giving a presentation by myself in class, but even reading a passage out loud provided a great deal of difficulty. I personally thought that I was an excellent speaker and enjoyed talking to people, I love telling stories and have heard I’m good at telling them as well. So how could I not be good at talking in front of a group of people?

I can still feel that horrible feeling, a few minutes before I needed to present my project on World War 2 in Mr. Mangonello’s American history class. I was fifth in the order, two students had already presented and I could feel that my turn to rushing towards me at a million miles an hour. I struggled to catch my breath, as if I was exhausted, yet I never moved from my seat. My heart was beating at what felt like three times faster than it ever should and as if it was crawling up my throat. Sweat started to become visible at my hairline whist beads of sweat raced down my spine. It was finally my turn, I choked on my first few sentences and honestly it got better, but not much better.

Being nervous was a new concept for me, not to “toot my own horn” or anything, I’m just saying that I thought I was used to high pressure situations from sports. If my section playoff lacrosse game went into overtime and the game and our whole season rested on my shoulders, I wouldn’t flinch. At first I thought it was a numbers thing, the more people the more nervous I’d become. But then after telling a story at a party with about twenty of my good friends as my audience, and feeling nothing, I knew it must be something else. My senior year curiosity got the best of me and I took I College Presentational Speaking class. I learned a great deal in that class and began my journey on being a better speaker.
