SUPPORT FOR LGBT COMMUNITY DURING PANDEMIC.

As June is the pride month of every year, I sat in the first week of June to write something about LGBT pride. But nothing has come to my mind because I don’t know anything about it and maybe that is the problem, not knowing anything about it. So I started to surf a lot and acknowledged the LGBT community. Pride month is an opportunity for people around the globe to celebrate the visibility of the LGBT community. And we as young Indians should educate each other about this and respect them irrespective of their gender.
As we are in a world where there’s a health crisis (COVID-19), I thought about the support of the LGBT community getting from the Indian government. LGBT people experience high rates of chronic conditions that compromise their immune systems and heighten their vulnerability resulting to get succumbed due to COVID-19. As estimated from the resource of google 65% of LGBT adults have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or HIV. They were denied basic health care facilities because of their gender. As most of them are sex workers and hence are poor and live in small houses, they do not maintain protective measures. So they need support. As I live in Visakhapatnam, I have learned about the NGO named ‘NESTAM’ supporting LGBT during this pandemic in our city, which is a great thing because even though they are physically capable they don’t get jobs because of the gender and due to the lockdown they don’t get the chance to go outside which affects their livelihood.
I hope there will be more NGOs supporting LGBT not only during the crisis days but also during calm and normal days.
