Reacting to React

Image from Blurb.com

A short story…

There once was a man who began learning React. He had just conquered what the developer wizards call, “vanilla Javascript.”

The man learned that React was a javascript library, which was a cool way of saying an extension to javascript. It allowed the man to do things in a much simpler fashion than he had just learned with the “vanilla” version.

Where previously, the man had to write tediously throughout javascript, HTML and CSS to get a functioning web application; he could now do most, if not all, in React!

The man wondered, WHY would anyone work with anything other than React?! This was the neapolitan to the vanilla ice cream of coding methods. But he soon realized that it was not as simple as it initially appeared to be…

There was a nuance to using React. As the man started trecking the new path that was React, he came across several obstacles that were quite challenging.

There were components, which were functions that returned one DOM element but could contain multiple elements within that element.

When dealing with dataflow, things seemed to appear easier as well, as the focus was to keep things more horizontal. That meant keeping data flow between one to two levels at most, occasionally a third, depending on circumstances.

With the help of a fellow traveler, he learned something interesting about the path. There was magic afoot!

Props, which are like function arguments in the old “vanilla Javascript”, can be passed down from parent components to their children components. Sometimes when a parent has multiple children, a prop can be sent down to all the child components with different names. So for example a function can be passed down to the children but can be triggered by the individual children at different times. This means functionality can be spread around quite smoothly when passing down props correctly and efficiently. The path began to clear up, and the man was able to finally move past the mountain with the absurd name!

As he turned the corner, he saw he had arrived at another summit. With a smile on his face, he yelled, “The journey never ends! What more can a man ask for! ”

Legend says he is still wondering about the wilderness that is known as “The Tech Universe”.

The end… or another beginning…
