The Best Things I Did As A 24 Year Old

A lot happened this year, here’s what I think I learned…

I’m pretty sure putting a picture of yourself is a little beyond egotistical, but I felt like I needed an image that embodied this whole thing and it is about my life so let the judgments fly but at least I warned you and realize that it’s a little over the top

Today is the day I turn 25. This is a post of happy birthday to myself but also a review of the last year for me in some of the big things that happened to me while I was 24. It was a really great year. I grew a lot in many ways, really came to understand a bit better who I was in certain situations and explored a lot of unchartered territory.

I feel like I am finally just barely getting comfortable with who I am as a person. There are many weird little quirks and idiosyncacies that I possess and I’m ok with those and actually embrace them almost to the point of boasting. Clearly I realize I’m frequently insane. Let me give you just one example.

There’s a belief I wholeheartedly possess; dishes should be evenly used and rotated. Essentially this means that when I unload the dishwasher rather than putting the bowls and plates on the top of the other like sized bowls and plates in the cupboard I put them on the bottom. I go to the extra effort to unload the dishwasher and pick up the remaining clean dishes and put the freshly cleaned ones at the bottom of the stack so the others can get used first.

That’s weird. A normal person would just stack them up and move on with their day, I however need to do that, and so I do.

That is just one example of many that I have, where I am just a little bit nerotic about things and it’s ok, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that it’s fine and that’s how I want to be, and thus I will live and be that way.

Aside from realizing that I’m a bit of a nerd and weird human I’ve had a lot of really amazing things happen over the course of being 24, here are a few that stand out to me as I review the year.

This year starting right after my 24th birthday at the end of 2016 I started going to a new Doctor who specializes in hormone therapy and works exclusively with people based on their numbers.

Every couple of months I go in and get blood drawn, then 2 weeks later when the blood work is complete I have a visit with my Doctor to review my numbers and see where I am at in life and how my body is progressing or getting worse in certain areas.

Over the course of 1 year I’ve seen a drastic improvement in my Omega-3 ratio of my cell walls building that up and getting much healthier. My Vitamin D levels are to where they need to be. My testosterone levels are up to where they need to be and I’ve had a bunch of other numbers move in the right direction.

Nothing has made a bigger impact on my life from a health perspective as taking this seriously and really focusing on getting the right foods, nutrients and supplements in my body to improve my health. It has dramatically helped with energy, stamina and overall attitude towards things.

I’m more patient, less hangry and overall a far better human by getting my numbers in the right place and feeling and looking better than I have before. I can’t recommend anything else so important for anyone that wants to do and be better in their life.

This year in our company we made the change in my professional growth to change from solely being a Co-Founder working on a lot of different stuff to having me take up the role of CTO and really focus on that.

In my professional development this has really shifted my mentality and focus on growing this portion of the business and really understanding what needs to be done to find the right people and concepts to execute it properly.

I’ve always loved tech and loved understanding it’s intracies and I’m enjoying that more and more now as I dig deeper into our data engineering systems our dashboarding capabilities and our new up and coming algorithms. All of this is my main priority and focus delivering a better product for our team and clients as we scale and grow.

It’s been more than just exciting, it’s helped work not even feel like work and has fit more perfectly into my wheelhouse of what I enjoy doing and am more naturally good at it. It allows me to practice principles of leadership and dive into the weeds to figure a problem out.

In my 24th year I completed 365 consecutive days of Medium posts. Each and everyday I posted something, though it was not always well written or pretty I did put thought into a post each day, wrote it and hit publish.

Over the course of the nearly 2 years straight that I’ve been publishing my audience has grown dramatically though that was never the intended purpose and the most beneficial aspect of starting to write and publish day in and day out is the clarity of thinking it has brought to me.

Publishing to medium though small and often simple posts has boost my confidence in many ways I would never have guessed. I think that is largely due to the fact that it enables me a place to practice putting logical and sequential thinking down on paper in a public place where others can judge the writing, thoughts and me.

When you do that for over 600 consecutive posts you care less about what anyone really thinks of you and you actually become more logical in your reasoning and more able to explain topics and ideas to others.

Furthermore, it has dramatically improved the quality of my writing and is something I actually look forward to each day, especially on those days where there a new thing I’m excited about or it’s an extra special day, sorta like today.

This year I entered a relationship that I am thrilled about. I couldn’t ask for a sweeter, kinder or attractive girl. We’ve been dating for almost 2 months now and it’s brought a lot of fantastic experiences and memories and has been a blast.

I’ve been in relationships before but they’ve always ended sooner than I expected or I had to get out and move on. I find that everyone in the world basically wants 2 things, they want to love and be loved. That’s pretty much it, when those are taken care of so many other things get easier.

It’s very much so been that way and I’ve both learned a lot and had the opportunity to enjoy someone who cares about me and allows me the opportunity to care about her.

It’s great :)

In my 24th year I bought a new car. Just decided one month that I was ready for a change, did a lot of research, like A LOT and test drove a bunch of stuff and ended up staying with Subaru. I changed models for the Forester XT and man do I love that car.

It’s fast, has amazing clearance, supports all the activities I love doing with ease and looks fantastic if you ask me. Plus it was highly reasonably priced thanks to my friends at the dealership and the gas mileage is actually pretty good considering it’s a turbocharged car.

This was the first car that I went out and bought all by myself with no opinions from others to see if I should buy it or not. The one I wanted came in stock and I went in and looked at it and off I went. It was relatively painless and an enjoyable process.

I don’t care much for shopping at a mall but I do love car shopping especially when I get to buy the car that I want. If you want to go biking or snowboarding or climbing let me know, my car is practically perfectly outfitted for every activity I can imagine.

This is sort of a cop out BUT it is an important thing to me each year. I’m on the iPhone upgrade program so if I elect to get a new phone each year I can as long as I keep paying for my hardware. This year was a bit tougher because the demand was so much higher for the new phone and I planned it all out and was one of the lucky few to get their iPhone X opening day.

Pre-Ordered it from my phone and got it within a couple minutes of it going on sale, I was so stoked and excited and I realized how much of a nerd I was in that moment but I didn’t even care.

To all the iPhone haters, good be gone with ya, more amazing smooth and reliable technology for me. This idea goes far beyond the notion of simply having the newest phone. This embodies the idea of the future and looking forward to new technology and growth and how that will impact our futures. I’m blown away by all we can do within the palm of our hands with an intuitive gesture here and there and how much more we can accomplish in a day as we leverage these technologies and robots in our lives.

Our team has grown immensley this year and I’m beyond thrilled to have been a part of the growth. I know I’ve grown internally as a person and human in the professional realm but I’ve seen a HUGE growth in our team. We’ve added new employees for starters and our employees that stuck around this past year have done some amazing things.

Our team has grown and contracted a bit and grown again and it’s been a wild ride. I’m super excited for this next year as we continue to focus on delivering results for our clients and seeing our team grow personally and our product leverage our ability to do more faster with higher precision.

Learning to be a better manager and actively practice learning those principles and practice those concepts has been a great change and focus for me.

I love our team and everything they are doing and am grateful to them for letting me take this day off to play and reflect and have some fun.

In this year I completed the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I did it with a good friend who is off serving a mission now but it was an amazing experience we put ourselves through and an accomplishment of which I’m extremely proud.

Here is the full write up, it’s long but still to this day makes my palms sweaty to read through it and relive that experience:

It not only taught me TONS about climbing technique and ability but let us practice some perseverance and get some experience on a really long hard climb. It was definitely a little above our ability and was beyond difficult. I was sore for days afterwards and could hardly put on my climbing shoes again for almost 2 weeks after.

It was also the first time I’ve been legitimately scared in my life and struggled to do something that was difficult. Nearly terrified me stepping out over the ledge on that pitch. If you haven’t read my story I’d highly encourage you give it a read it was fun but terrifying and amazing all at the same time.

In addition to writing 365 posts since my last birthday I’ve spent much of my free time focused on learning. Especially listening to podcasts and audiobooks. I’ve now listened to books for 1 month straight, that is if you take 24 hours a day times every day of the month, so something like over 700 hours of listening time to books. That wasn’t all in this last year but much of it was and I very much enjoyed it.

As part of a request/dare I read all 7 of the Harry Potter books start to finish in about 3 weeks, and that was the first time I finished them all.

I really enjoyed reading “Open” by Andre Agassi and “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight. I also took up a lot of fiction this year which was a first for me, reading books like “Ready Player One” and “Armada.” Plus one can’t forget the amazing books like “The Push” by Tommy Caldwell or “American Kingpin” by Nick Bilton.

This year I’ve come even more so to appreciate and love learning from psychology and language to math and computer science. I’ve had the opportunity to dramatically increase my knowledge and impact.

Each year at my birthday I take the time to think and reflect. I’ve had hundreds if not thousands of amazing conversations with friends and family. My relationships are probably my most cherished asset I have in my life with all my friends, clients, team and family. The 24th year of my life was rather fantastic and I only see the next year getting better, allowing and enabling further growth, talents and abilities.

Thank you to each and every person that has ever read any of my posts or thoughts and to those of you who are my friends and confidants. Thank you for treating me well and helping me learn and grow and become a better human being on this earth.
