Street Photography Taboos You Should Break

There are many seemingly sacred things not to do in street photography. These are common things that are taught in street photography that is considered taboo, but they shouldn’t be.

Don’t Shoot The Homeless

Many photographers say you should never shoot the homeless. They are disadvantaged, and you should not try to capitalize on their suffering. I disagree. If you are just shooting the homeless to get an emotional picture, then don’t do it. If however, you are shooting with something in mind such as displaying the photo in hopes to help the community pass more help to the homeless population, then, by all means, shoot away.

Street photography and documentary photography often have some overlap. If your images of the homeless can help them out in some way, then it is OK in my book. Shooting monochrome only forces you to look at your potential subjects differently.

Don’t Mix Monochrome and Color

If you are going to shoot street photography, then many photographers suggest you pick only 1 for your session of shooting. Shoot all color or all monochrome. I digress though. If I am shooting street photography during a parade, then I might choose to shoot color, and then as evening comes, I might switch to monochrome…
